CHOOSING CLASS LEVELS

Which Class is Right for your Child?
The age groups for our classes overlap at key development points. By providing a continuous, mixed-age curriculum from age 2 onward, we give children the opportunity to pursue a variety of activities for emotional, intellectual, and social growth appropriate to their own needs without being “held back” or “pushed ahead.” We focus on creating a peaceful environment where students feel comfortable exploring at their own pace.

It is important to match each child to the environment that will support his or her growth according to his or her own timetable. The Director will have the final say in placing children who are on the border between age groups.

General Guidelines:

  • 2-year-olds - The Early Primary class is the ideal environment for two-year-olds. A 2-year-old who will turn 3 in September or October can be considered for the Primary class.
  • 3-year-olds – A 3-year-old child must be able to go to the bathroom independently before joining the Primary class. Young 3-year-olds who are new to a preschool environment may start in the Early Primary class. Any child still in diapers or needing help using the toilet will start in the Early Primary class.
  • 4- and 5-year-olds and the Kindergarten year – Our mixed-age Primary class allows children to learn and develop at their own pace, with access to the Kindergarten and 1st grade curriculum whenever they are ready.
  • 6-year-olds and up – Our Elementary Class begins with first grade. Children who turn 6 before December 31 of the school year may be considered for the Elementary Class. An interview, background information, and class visit are part of the evaluation process.
